A Gun For Hire is how Helmut Newton would sometimes describe himself, having been commissioned by fashion houses and jewellery designers, sanitary and car manufacturers, and even hardware store chains to photograph their products. Over 150 such photographs from the past two decades have been brought together for the first time at the Helmut Newton Foundation under the title “A Gun for Hire.” The exhibition includes fashion photographs for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Blumarine and Mugler along with the last editorial assignments he did for Vogue and other publicity campaigns.

Newton’s images intentionally underscore the individual styles of the fashion designers, often proving the photographer to be well ahead of his time. Many of the photographs were taken in Monte Carlo, whose “terrain vague” would serve as the photographer’s outdoor studio for the last two decades of his life.
