Helmut Newton Foundation

Dear Subscriber,

Welcome to the first edition of the HNF Newsletter.

You have expressed an interest in being kept up to date with our activities here at the Helmut Newton Foundation, and we are therefore pleased to present the first of our regular newsletters.

In principle we will highlight upcoming exhibitions, as well as any other activities we are involved with that we believe might be of interest to you.

As a subscriber to our newsletter, you will be the first to hear of any public activities we have planned, and we certainly hope that as a result you will be encouraged to visit our wonderful building here at the Jebensstrasse 2, in Berlin-Charlottenberg.

And so it is that our main topic for this first edition is our next exhibition entitled 'Men, War & Peace' and featuring the work of Helmut Newton, James Nachtwey and David LaChapelle. This show will run until May 20th, 2007.

We would also like to inform you a little bit about the Helmut Newton Shop and a brochure we have created to give you a better overview of the articles available.

Though this newsletter is a modest beginning to our external communications, we will do our best to satisfy your interest in Helmut Newton and his works.

With best regards,
The HNF Team

DAVID LACHAPELLE

American fashion and lifestyle photographer David LaChapelle, with his original visual language, has depicted staged images of hedonistic society in a vibrant and iconoclastic way for more than a decade. He creates colourful, ironic and provocative images of the desire/dream machine that is the USA. In his photography we meet many of those in whom the mass media take interest: Marilyn Manson and Madonna, Pamela Anderson and Eminem, Paris Hilton and Leonardo diCaprio. Each setting is designed to be as artificial as possible and it is these obsessively composed scenarios that form the stylistic basis for his extraordinary photographs, many of which unabashedly court controversy.

JAMES NACHTWEY

In contrast, the American war photographer, James Nachtwey, imbues his imagery with a humane, moral tenor and delivers us a shocking series of photographs from the war zones of our time. He is the epitome of the 'engaged photographer', and succeeds in capturing the essence of existence within a frame. In spite of their dramatic realism his photographs possess a surreal quality that engraves itself into our collective consciousness, as we witness the drama of life unfold before us on an epic scale.

HELMUT NEWTON SHOP

Though a separate entity from the foundation, the Helmut Newton Shop is still very close to our hearts. Whether you are looking for an unusual gift, a surprising t-shirt, or a special treat for yourself or a good friend, there are many stylish accessories available to choose from.

Almost the entire range of exclusive accessories is based on the photography of Helmut Newton, and, with the prices of his prints skyrocketing at auction these days, the items on offer are an affordable way to gain access to at least a part of his work.

In order to facilitate the order process, we have recently created an electronic brochure in the form of a downloadable PDF-file . The layout of the catalogue provides readers with a convenient overview of all the items available, either on-line, or through the shop here in Berlin. We trust you will like what you see. The downloadable file can be found by clicking here.

We have also recently introduced much more affordable shipping rates, so no matter which part of the world you live in, you will most probably benefit from the new reduced rates. We trust you will find the range to be attractive and will therefore be happy to do at least some of your Christmas shopping with us. I wish you all the best this coming holiday season,

Gerti Hansen
